Southaven is a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee and began as Memphis homebuilder Kemmons Wilson, the founder of Holiday Inn, developed a few residential subdivisions featuring small starter homes just inside the Mississippi border. Since then, Southaven has grown by leaps and bounds and is now the third largest city in Mississippi.

Southaven Schools are part of a county school system that is recognized for its academic accomplishments and innovative teaching initiatives. The DeSoto County School District provides a diverse academic curriculum, as well as opportunities to explore the arts. Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto is a 339-bed hospital that offers diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. It includes a 400,000-square-foot, 11-story bed tower with more than 100 acute and critical care beds.
When it comes to taxes, Mississippi is tax-friendly to retirees. Qualified retirement income is exempted from state income tax and Social Security is not taxed, regardless of total income. Persons 65 years of age and older are exempt from ad valorem taxes up to $75,000 of the market value on their primary residence.
Dining and Shopping
Southaven features a large-scale shopping mall, Southaven Towne Center, which is located just south of Goodman Road between I-55 and Airways Boulevard. The mall is open-air with various stores and restaurants, including J.C. Penney, Dillard’s, Gordman’s, Sportsman’s Warehouse, hhgregg, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
Parks and Recreation
Snowden Grove Park hosts the Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series, the USSSA Fall Nationals and the NABF World Classic. Summer youth baseball is also played there attracting more then 1,500 teams each summer.
Greenbrook Park is also an award winning softball complex where girl’s softball is played. The Field of Dreams was opened in 2004 allowing mentally and physically challenged children and adults the opportunity to participate in league softball. This program is no cost to the players’ families for league participation.
The City of Southaven has a 9-hole golf course located at State Line and Swinnea and is also home to Northcreek Golf Course, located at Stateline and Horn Lake Road. In addition to traditional golf, there is an 18-hole Frisbee golf course located in Central Park.
BancorpSouth Sports Center, located on the grounds of Snowden Grove Park, has two 18 hole putt-putt miniature golf courses, indoor soccer, fast pitch softball and baseball indoor batting cages, batting tunnels for live pitching, and a family friendly arcade.
Southaven is the home of The Landers Center, a 200,000 square foot facility that hosts more than 1,000 events each year including the Mississippi RiverKings hockey games, the Mid-South Fair, and live plays at the in-house DeSoto Family Theatre, a 400-seat state-of-the-art theater.
In addition to The Landers Center, Southaven also features an outdoor entertainment complex, The Snowden Grove Amphitheatre. With fixed floor seating for 4,000 and additional seating on the lawn for 7,000, Snowden Grove Amphitheatre has hosted big acts such as Lynard Skynard, Candlebox, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson, BuckCherry, Blue October, and Saliva.
